Employment and Training

Washington Heights and Inwood is home to one of NYC's largest concentrations of poor and unemployed people. Nearly 75% of residents speak limited or no English and over 40% of residents lack a high school diploma or GED. The unemployment rate is over 14%. With limited or no English proficiency, minimal formal job experience and skills and limited educational attainment, community residents face tremendous difficulty in obtaining employment that will provide a family-sustaining wage. To compete successfully in the labor market, basic work readiness and vocational skills training, job placement assistance and post-employment retention services are essential.
