Securing and maintaining safe and affordable housing in Manhattan is a challenge for many residents. The 2005 Income and Affordability Study of the NYC Rent Guidelines Board shows that while the citywide rental vacancy rate was 2.94% in 2002, indicating a very tight housing market, the vacancy rate 1.5% for apartments $699 and under per month. By offering eviction prevention legal services every step of the way, NMIC helps families across Washington Heights and Inwood avoid eviction and homelessness.
Despite the fact that 70% of clients have already been served with a notice of eviction when they walk through our doors, virtually none of the approximately 5,000 clients we saw in 2005 suffered a permanent loss of their homes or entered the shelter system.
NMIC is the only locally-based legal services provider in Washington Heights and Inwood.
Our Director of Legal Services, Kenneth Rosenfeld, was the first recipient of the Public Interest Law Award, given by the New York State Bar Association Committee on Public Interest Law in 1995.
