Adult and Community Education

ESOL Classes (English for Speakers of Other Languages). As an agency serving one of NYC’s largest immigrant communities, we believe that it is our duty to help the newest New Yorkers learn the language that they need to succeed in this fast-paced city.

Adult Basic Education and Pre-GED (English and Spanish). Without a HS diploma or GED, many doors are closed to the residents of Washington Heights. Our program enables local residents to study toward a GED which for them can mean better work or enrolling in college.

Civics and Citizenship. Most immigrants’ goal is that they will eventually obtain citizenship and be able to have a voice in the political system of the country. Our Civics and Citizenship classes give local residents the tools that they need to reach that goal.

Family Literacy. Our family literacy program partners with local public schools and other community organizations to provide an array of educational services for neighborhood families.

Tenant Workshops. We hold monthly workshops open to all community residents interested in forming tenant associations. We discuss tenants’ rights in New York City, legal and administrative strategies to enforce those rights, and the importance of taking collective action.

Leadership Workshops. Leadership Workshops provide the structure for members to define issues relating to their organizing priorities and develop plans to act on them. Objectives include identifying targets, setting time lines, identifying allies, and working out a mobilization plan.

Asthma Workshops. Asthma workshops provide families with the necessary tools to help reduce the triggers that lead to asthma attacks, the number of school absences for children, and number of emergency room visits. In addition, parents are exposed to a variety of treatment options including non-traditional practices.

Domestic Violence Prevention Workshops. Staff provides workshops to parents in public schools, at WIC sites, and at various community institutions on subjects ranging from warning signs to prevention.

Immunization Workshops. Staff provides workshops to parents in public schools, at WIC sites, and at various community institutions on the health dangers associated with not complying with the recommended immunization schedule and resources available to assist them.

Lead Poisoning Prevention Workshops. Our workshops teach residents about the sources and symptoms of lead poisoning; proper nutrition to reduce the impact of lead; temporary measures to prevent lead poisoning while waiting for abatements; how to advocate for proper and safe abatements; lead poisoning prevention laws and rights of residents as well as educational resources for children with special needs.

Diabetes Initiative. The Northern Manhattan Exercise Project (NorMEP) uses exercise to reduce residents of Northern Manhattan risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
