Saturday, November 12, 2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 en route from New York to Santo Domingo,D.R. This tragedy, coming right on the heels of the September 11th attack, shook up the entire city, but was especially painful for the Washington Heights and Inwood communities, where many of the victims either lived or had connections.

On April 20th, Councilmember Jackson came to NMIC to meet with the participants of the DV Support Group. Eighteen survivors of intimate partner abuse shared their experiences and talked about how the Domestic Violence Project has helped them heal from violence and move their lives forward. The Councilmember's funding has played a key role in helping NMIC to offer this important program.

Community residents with children in their households will be provided with two quarts of low-fat milk. Distribution will take place every Thursday at 9am in front of NMIC. This is a collaborative project between Homes for the Homeless and NMIC.

Sarah Banda, Domestic Violence Project Coordinator, and three survivors will make a presentation to students and faculty at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) on Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at 10am. The presentation will focus on an overview on domestic violence, resources and survivors sharing their stories.
They volunteer their services and expertise to more than 60 community residents. Over the course of the afternoon, the volunteers engaged NMIC clients in a variety of critical adult education and workforce-related services including mock interviews, resume and cover letter preparation, English conversation practice, and basic computer skills. An enriching and rewarding experience was had by both the volunteers and the clients. Once again, NMIC would like to sincerely thank The Ogilvy and Mather Group for their time and committment to our community.
