Asthma Workshops and Screening

As a member of the Asthma Basics for Children Coalition (ABC) and WIN For Asthma, NMIC provides community outreach and education on asthma triggers, as well as treatment and case management services to families with children that have excessive hospitalizations and school absences.

Need: The highest levels of air particulates are found in Washington Heights/Inwood, where EPA readings frequently exceed the “danger” level by more than 15 times. As a result, in 2005, a fourth of the children in both Harlem and Washington Heights had asthma, and an additional 13% had symptoms of asthma but had not yet been diagnosed. These prevalence rates are four times higher than the national average.

Impact:

  • In 2005, 522 children received comprehensive asthma screenings.
  • The program helps families by completing asthma screeners, educating families on triggers and treatment, and linking families to resources.
  • Collaborating with other community based organizations helps to maximize resources and our ability to reach a greater number of community residents.
