Benefits Enrollment

In 2005, 1,317 individuals received screenings and assistance in accessing public benefits.

Poor residents of Washington Heights rarely get the help they need to escape poverty. For example, many do not know what public benefits — from tax refunds to health insurance for children — they're due. NMIC’s aim is to reduce poverty by giving people the right advice about public benefits, the right legal counsel and the right financial assistance (including help solving debt problems).

Impact:

  • In 2005, 1,317 individuals received screenings and assistance in accessing public benefits.
  • NMIC’s legal department ensured that clients can successfully access these benefits in their far-reaching class action suit, Reynolds vs. Giuliani.
  • We are currently working on Encarnation v. Barnhart, a case which if successful, will allow thousands of children who have multiple disabilities but no one single major diagnoses, for instance speech or hearing impairments coupled with developmental problems, to prove their disability by net effect of their multiple problems and thereby collect SSI benefits.
