Civics and Citizenship

The majority of residents in Washington Heights and Inwood are Dominican immigrants and nearly 75% of the population speaks limited to no English. Oftentimes, community residents cannot afford the high priced legal assistance and educational preparation available to wealthy immigrants.

Impact:

  • NMIC’s Adult Education Program provides free ESOL classes and on-line materials such as Reading Companion (hyperlink) to over 1200 students annually.
  • NMIC ranks in the highest group in New York State Adult Education Department’s report card system.
  • Thanks to our great teachers, skilled staff and engaging curriculum, NMIC does not see the high attrition rates that plague so many adult education programs.
