According
to NYC Police Department crime statistics, WH/I has one
of the highest numbers of reported incidents of domestic
violence in New York City, with fully one-half of all
reported incidents in Manhattan occurring in upper Manhattan.
The high levels of poverty, unemployment, new immigrants,
and inadequate housing that affect Washington Heights
and Inwood exacerbate the problem by limiting victim’s
options for escape and access to services.
NMIC is co-founder of the New York Latinas Against
Domestic Violence that plans the annual Gladys Ricart and
Victims of Domestic Violence Memorial Walk (Brides' March)
every September 26th commemorating the day of Gladys

•Legal services in cases involving orders of protection,
custody and visitation, and child/spousal support.
•Immigration assistance.
•Shelter placement & relocation assistance.
•Eviction prevention including legal representation in
housing court
•Support groups.
•Court, Medical, and Police accompaniment and advocacy.
•Case management and advocacy with multiple systems.
•Referrals for mental health services, children’s
counseling, lock changes, welfare, food stamps, health
insurance, medical assistance, cell phones, food pantries,
clothing, etc.
•Special workshops on self defense, stress reduction,
women’s health and parenting.
•ESOL, GED and citizenship courses.
•Resume writing, job training and job placement.
•Personal finance courses and financial counseling.
•Credit Repair, tax assistance.
