Domestic
Violence Prevention Program and Workshops |

Program
According
to NYC Police Department crime statistics, WH/I has one
of the highest numbers of reported incidents of domestic
violence in New York City, with fully one-half of all
reported incidents in Manhattan occurring in upper Manhattan.
The high levels of poverty, unemployment, new immigrants,
and inadequate housing that affect Washington Heights
and Inwood exacerbate the problem by limiting women’s
options for escape and access to services.
Impact:
-
Client
centered and culturally sensitive services are available
to the 350 battered women we serve annually. They include
risk assessments, safety planning and education; accompaniment
to courts, precincts, and hospitals; support groups;
long term case management and advocacy, and referrals
for mental health services, educational programs, and
childcare.
-
The
legal advocacy initiative serves battered women seeking
assistance with such matters as orders of protection,
custody, eviction and immigration petitions for residency.
-
We
link women to job readiness, training and placement;
financial literacy courses; individual credit/debt management,
free tax preparation; housing advocacy pre and post
shelter, eviction prevention, and relocation assistance
and placement.
