Earned Income Tax Credit

Washington Heights and Inwood had by far its highest rate of unemployment at 13.6%. Getting a job can be key to many families survival, and obtaining a family-sustaining wage often hinges on work supports such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Yet, many who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), are either unaware of the program or do not know if they qualify for it. As a result, billions of EITC dollars are left unclaimed each year. Our ETIC program helps residents complete their taxes and apply for the EITC.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site hosted by NMIC provided more than $4,407,568 in refunds to Washington Heights, Inwood and New York City residents. Below please find highlights of the 2010 Tax Season:

  • 2,612 total returns prepared

  • 41% of the population served was eligible for Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)

  • $2,396,517 in EITC refunds

  • 722 filers were 60 years and older

  • 795 filers were taxpayers with dependants
