Family Literacy

The majority of residents in Washington Heights and Inwood are Dominican immigrants and nearly 75% of the population speaks limited to no English. As parents, immigrants face a diverse set of barriers to helping their children learn and do well in school. Parents who do not speak English often have trouble helping their kids with homework or speaking to teachers about their child’s performance.

Impact:

  • Parents learn how to participate in the NYC education system. Once finishing our program, many parents become community leaders and teach other parents the intricacies of the U.S. educational system.
  • Our program provides children with literacy-rich materials and experiences, which research demonstrates is the most important predictor of academic success in later grades (Monzó & Rueda, 2001; McNicol & Dalton, 2002; Shiel, 2002).
  • NMIC ranks in the highest group in New York State Adult Education Department’s report card system.
