Homelessness Prevention and Tenant Support Services Program

Homelessness Prevention

Securing and maintaining safe and affordable housing in Manhattan is a challenge for many residents. There are over 8,000 families residing in NYC shelters. Almost half of all eligible homeless families come from 10 community districts in NYC. Primarily located in the Bronx, Central Brooklyn, and northern Manhattan and represent 17% of all districts in NYC.

Impact:

  • We help over 90 homeless families per year transition into their new homes.
  • Program staff has prevented the return to the shelter system for all families in the program.
  • Program staff has linked families to appropriate services including educational and vocational programs and counseling, provided education on tenants rights and advocacy around entitlement assistance.

Tenant Support Services Program

NMIC provides case management services to Housing Preservation Development (HPD) Section 8 voucher holders who are at risk of losing their vouchers due to Housing Quality Standard (HQS) failures; not submitting their recertification packages or are facing eviction procedures. Families are also provided with referrals to other service providers and advocacy around entitlement assistance, health care access, etc. is also provided.

Need: For some of our families, dealing with the HPD beauracracy can be very overwhelming and challenging. Some HPD Section 8 voucher holders are seniors who may be homebound, disabled or completed isolated. Other families do not understand the HPD notices due to language barriers .

Points of Impact:

1. The TSS program ensures that HPD Section 8 voucher holders maintain their vouchers and adequate housing, achieve economic self sufficiency and become fully integrated into their communities.

2. The TSS program assisted 115 recipients with completing their recertification packages in 2005.

3. In 2005, the TSS program provided crisis intervention services and prevented the eviction of 35 clients.
