Housing

Tenant Organizing. We educate tenants living in the neighborhood about their rights and organize them to obtain needed repairs.

Community Organizing. NMIC's Community Organizing Department develops effective community leaders who preserve affordable housing and improve community conditions.

Housing Development. When landlords abandon their buildings, community organizers can help well-organized tenant associations purchase, refinance, and rehabilitate their buildings. This removes distressed housing from the speculative real estate market and places it in the hands of those with a permanent interest in its quality and affordability – the tenants themselves.

Weatherization. By replacing inefficient windows, boilers, appliances, and providing insulation, our weatherization team insures energy-efficiency in the buildings we serve and offers the promise of a sustainable future for affordable housing in Manhattan.

Housing Legal Services. Legal services are a cornerstone to ensuring tenants are protected against the all-to-common problems of unfair eviction and substandard housing. We represent tenants and tenant associations to secure stable and safe housing accommodations and avoid eviction.

Homelessness Prevention and Tenant Support Services Program. We provide social services to formally homeless families relocating to permanent housing in Washington Heights, Inwood, East Harlem, and the West Bronx. Our services help families transition into their new homes, neighborhoods, and responsibilities.
