Immigration and Citizenship Services

More than half of the adult population of Northern Manhattan came to the United States within the past 30 years from Latin America, particularly from the Dominican Republic. This massive immigration transformed what had been a middle-class neighborhood into an overcrowded community of very poor people unsure of their rights and status in a new country.

Impact:

  • NMIC’s bilingual immigration services staff work with community residents through the entire application process including translation and completion of all application forms, case management with USCIS, and preparation for the citizenship exam.
  • In 2005 we helped 770 immigrants complete their naturalization and citizenship forms.
  • 211 immigrants completed NMIC’s citizenship preparation class in 2005. For more information on the civics classes, click here.
