More
than half of the adult population of Northern Manhattan
came to the United States within the past 30 years from
Latin America, particularly from the Dominican Republic.
This massive immigration transformed what had been a middle-class
neighborhood into an overcrowded community of very poor
people unsure of their rights and status in a new country.
Impact:
NMIC’s
bilingual immigration services staff work with community
residents through the entire application process including
translation and completion of all application forms,
case management with USCIS, and preparation for the
citizenship exam.
In
2005 we helped 770 immigrants complete their naturalization
and citizenship forms.
