Housing Legal Services

Free housing legal advocacy is the cornerstone of NMIC's legal services department. We protect community residents from the increasing threats of homelessness, displacement and substandard living conditions. By providing aggressive legal representation and assistance to tenants and tenant associations we are able to secure them stable and safe housing.

Environmental Justice

We ensure that landlords make the renovations necessary to protect all of New York City's children from the impact of lead paint, remove mold and protect all residents from environmental asthma triggers.

Senior Legal Services

We provide a comprehensive list of high quality legal services to seniors age 60+, prioritizing those at risk of losing their housing and independence.

Domestic Violence

Our domestic violence program provides a holistic set of services aimed at helping victims and survivors achieve safety, stability and new levels of independence. The legal advocacy initiative serves clients seeking assistance with such matters as orders of protection, custody, eviction and immigration remedies.

Benefits Advocacy

NMIC Legal Services ensures that all clients get the appropriate public benefits the law allows. We concentrate on supplemental rent subsidies to keep low income families in their homes and helping disabled children receive SSI benefits.

Consumer Debt

NMIC's Legal Department assits clients with consumer debt legal issues with both advice and respesentation. With the increasing burden of improper consumer debt claims, NMIC staff is able to help relieve clients from the crushing econmic burden of improper consumer debt cases and claims.

Disability

NMIC attorneys represent both children and adults in reversing improperly denied SSI and Social Security disability claims. This assistance takes place at the adminstrative hearing level, the Federal District court and Appeals Court.
