Adult Basic Education and Pre-GED

A total of 57,887, or 44.3% of persons 25+ lack a high school diploma in Washington Heights and Inwood. Although this is partly due to the tremendous numbers of immigrants living in the community, poor public schools exacerbate the problem. At George Washington High School, the public high school serving our community, the student dropout rate is 22.5%. Without a GED, residents face tremendous barriers to obtaining a family-sustaining wage.

Impact:

  • By offering our Adult Education classes in both Spanish and English we are able to address the diverse educational needs of the community.
  • As a community organization, we are able to give our students the personal touch and counseling and support that they may have missed when in school.
  • NMIC ranks in the highest group in New York State Adult Education Department’s report card system.
