Senior Legal Services

Low-income Manhattan seniors face daunting challenges in their efforts to live independently in their own homes. With one in five seniors living at or below the federal poverty level and their average income only half of the county median, growing numbers of seniors live one crisis away from homelessness as they try to make their fixed retirement or disability income cover the rising costs of housing, utilities, food, medicine and transportation.

Impact:

  • Of the 1250 cases accepted for individual full legal representation by the NMIC Legal Department in the past year, 288 were individuals over 59, with incomes at or near the poverty level.
  • Approximately 24 poverty level seniors a month are represented by NMIC legal staff. Another 1500 a year are provided legal advice, brief counseling and other services, such as document review and information regarding various legal issues.
  • Over the last year NMIC staff has been successful in keeping our senior clients housed by either negotiating or litigating successful outcomes in 100% of the cases.
