Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Free Tax Preparation Program

In 2006, we brought over $5 million back into the hands of Northern Manhattan’s poorest residents

With an unemployment rate in Washington Heights and Inwood at 14.35%, getting a job can be key to many families survival. obtaining a family-sustaining wage often hinges on work supports such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). Yet, many who are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), are either unaware of the program or do not know if they qualify for it. As a result, billions of EITC dollars are left unclaimed each year. Our ETIC program helps residents complete their taxes and apply for the EITC.

Impact:

  • Since 2004, over 60 individuals have been trained and employed as tax preparers in NMIC’s and other EITC sites throughout the city.
  • The program brought $5,012,474 in 2006 tax refunds back into the community, an increase from $4,205,902 in 2005. The average return per client was $1,745 in 2006.
  • In 2006, the number of returns filed at NMIC went up 34% to 3,338, making NMIC the 30th largest free volunteer income tax assistance (VITA) site in the nation.
