Inwood Tenants One Step Closer to Returning Home

The former tenants of 21 Arden Street in Inwood received an early Christmas gift this December- news that they’re one step closer to returning home.

Since 2008, tenants of the 15-unit building have been displaced from their homes due to extremely poor conditions throughout the building, which had been neglected by the landlord. Following years of delays, pressure from affordable-housing activists, elected officials, and NMIC’s Organizing team has finally paid off and led to the start of assessments of the site.

On December 22nd, geotechnical engineers completed “soil borings” to test the structural integrity of the earth below the building, a critical first step in the renovation process. With testing finally underway, organizers are optimistic that the site will be ready for the next phase of the process by Summer 2018. The building will undergo a gut-renovation to complete extensive repairs as well as modernize each apartment.
